Planning checklist
- If the temperature is high, steam is present, coolant is escaping, or the warning is severe, stop in a safe place and shut the engine down.
- After the system is fully cool, inspect the reservoir, radiator area, hoses, belt drive, fan operation evidence, and visible leak trails.
- Pressure-test or otherwise test the system using the vehicle’s procedure; do not open a hot radiator cap or mix incompatible coolant types.
- Refill and bleed only with the correct procedure, then verify operating temperature and leaks under controlled conditions before returning to normal driving.
Safety note: Never remove a pressurized cap while hot. Coolant is poisonous to people and animals; clean spills immediately and dispose of used coolant properly.
Common questions
Can I keep driving if the temperature returns to normal?
Not without finding the cause. An intermittent fan, low coolant level, leak, or air pocket can return suddenly and cause severe engine damage.
Can I use water instead of coolant?
Only as an emergency measure when appropriate, and it must be corrected with the specified coolant mixture as soon as possible. Follow the owner’s manual.
