Coilover Installation and Setup Guide

Coilovers change ride height, damping, suspension travel, and alignment. The correct setup preserves usable travel and tire clearance instead of simply lowering the car as far as possible. Record the stock height, follow the kit’s adjustment procedure, and plan for an alignment.

Planning checklist

  1. Set a target use case and ride height that preserves suspension travel, tire clearance, bump-stop function, and safe ground clearance.
  2. Measure stock ride height and document the original hardware, then verify the coilover’s spring, damper, mount, and electronic-control compatibility.
  3. Install with the vehicle supported correctly, set preload and height according to the kit instructions, and torque fasteners at the specified condition.
  4. Settle the suspension, remeasure, inspect clearance through steering and compression movement, and obtain an alignment before performance driving.
Safety note: Suspension components affect steering and braking. Spring energy, incorrect preload, or insufficient travel can create a loss-of-control hazard; use a qualified shop when the setup is uncertain.

Common questions

Should I lower my car as much as possible?

No. Excessive lowering can reduce travel, increase bump steer, cause contact, and make the car less predictable. Use the manufacturer’s usable range.

Do coilovers require an alignment?

Yes, the change in ride height or hardware position can change toe, camber, and other angles. Alignment is part of the installation, not an optional cosmetic step.
